….Budapest2 Budapest       Famous Square in Budapest Queens Bridge Over the Danube - Budapest

BUDAPEST CHAIN BRIDGE

This was one of our favorite places!   Just an awesome, fascinating city full of amazing architecture and parks, sidewalk cafes, interesting people, and a variety of building types like nothing we’ve ever seen.

There’s a lovely scenic area of structures above the Danube that was particularly attractive.  It was called Fisherman’s Bastion, and looked like a big multi-turret castle with arches on the outter side of the walkway that opened to a drop-dead gorgeous  view of Budapest and the river.

We went there after visiting  yet another ‘St. Stephens’, and ate lunch at a scenic outdoor cafe overlooking the whole area of the Bastion, the river, and the  city.

They have a major boulevard, similar to the Ringstrasse in Vienna that was filled with interesting people, street vendors, statues, shops and buildings. There’s also a very scenic promenade right beside the river with lots of colorful cafes with umbrellas, flowers, etc.

There was one bit of history though, in sharp contrast to the lively atmosphere of the city that was very sad,  and a reminder of some of the more somber events that also took place in this city.

Beside the river in one little area, were about 30 pairs of shoes, solidified in some sort of permanent coating, that was a reminder of the tragic and horrendous events surrounding the haulocast.  The shoes were a memorial of some Jewish people who were shot into the river by the Nazis.   Time just stands still when you look over from the Promenade and those come into view.

There was also a HUGE Central Market, and Minkey went crazy in there trying to find some bananas.  Minkey Mama had to calm him down by telling him his favorite waiter, Christian, would be giving him another one tomorrow at breakfast.

Budapest at Night from the River

HERE’S A VERY COOL VIDEO OF THIS GORGEOUS CITY ……. ENJOY!

This was definitely a place worth coming back to.  In some ways, we actually liked it more than Vienna.  THE VIEW OF IT FROM THE RIVER IS TOO BEAUTIFUL FOR WORDS.

It has a gorgeous bridge crossing the river, Fisherman’s Bastion is magnificent, and the view of the city from the river is amazing.   Very interesting place in every respect.  We thought it was one of the most beautiful cities in the world at night from the river.

Oh, and one last thing…..Budapest is actually TWO CITIES …. BUDA AND PEST (pronounced Pescht).    Bet y’all didn’t know that!    We didn’t.

Well on to the next county!   See you guys in a minute.
